Naki's parental controls are the reason most families buy it, and they take about two minutes to set up properly. This is the whole process, in order.
Step 1 — Power on and connect
Power on your Naki device and connect it to your home WiFi network. The Naki Auto uses a data plan instead of WiFi, so it skips this step.
Step 2 — Sign in to the portal
Go to portal.naki.audio and sign in to your account. This is where all parental control lives — not on the device itself, and not in the phone app. The Naki Go app is a listening surface for parents; it does not control the devices.
Step 3 — Add the device
In the sidebar, click Devices → Add New Device. Enter the Device ID, which is printed on the top line of the Content List on the device screen. Give it a name you will recognise later — "Kitchen", "Shloimy's room" — and click Add Device.
Naming matters more than it seems. Once you have three or four devices, downtime schedules are much easier to manage when they are named after rooms rather than numbers.
Step 4 — Choose what plays
On the portal home screen, every content selection has a colored dot in its top right corner. Click a selection to toggle it:
- Green — enabled, it will play on your devices.
- Red — disabled, it will not appear at all.
- Orange — there are more selections inside; click through to set them individually.
All default content is already safe for children. Shiurim and podcasts are opt-in, so if you want them you switch them on yourself — which is why a device set up for a four-year-old and one set up for a bochur can look completely different.
Step 5 — Set downtime
Click a device name to open its downtime presets. Downtime prevents the device from turning on at all during the hours you set, which is what makes it useful for bedtime, school hours and family time. There is no negotiating with a device that will not switch on.
Set these per room. A kitchen speaker that stays available until 9pm and a bedroom speaker that shuts off at 7:30pm is a very common arrangement.
Step 6 — Sync
To apply your content choices to every device, go to Home in the sidebar, pick a device from the dropdown, and click the 🔄 button. It turns green when the sync is complete.
One thing to know: content settings sync across devices; downtime settings do not. Downtime is deliberately per-device, because most families want different hours in different rooms.
What you cannot do
Being straight about the limits: detailed listening history is not currently available. You control what is available rather than reviewing what was played. For most families that is the right trade — the library is vetted, so anything that plays is something you already approved.
Frequently asked questions
Can I set time limits rather than a schedule?
Downtime works on a schedule — specific hours when the device will not turn on — rather than a daily allowance. In practice a schedule is easier to enforce, because it does not depend on tracking usage.
Do I need the app to manage the device?
No. The Naki Go app does not control devices at all. Everything is managed in the portal in a browser.
What if my child changes the settings on the device?
They cannot. Content and downtime settings are controlled by the account holder through the portal, and each device is tied to your account by its unique Device ID.
Do the settings apply to the Naki Go app too?
The app is intended for parents and adults, and counts as a device on your plan. If you want a child using the app, set up its content the same way you would any other device.
